Northeast Ohio Union for the Homeless as at least 50 of the more than 100 unconfined men currently residents of Independence refused to leave their rooms Thursday as part of the demolition strategy in the event County of Kaiyahoga pandemic announced Wednesday evening.

Almond Budish, a Kaiyahoga County executive who was struck down by Independent Mayor Gregory Kurtz, said the nonprofit Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry had terminated his contract with Ramada and made the men who stayed there the largest without- state shelter. Asked to be referred to 2100 Lakeside Refuge.

Although LMM’s original contract with Ramada was scheduled to run until August 31. Some of the men will be leaving tomorrow, on Budish’s orders.

Budish’s decision came later. Mayor Kurtz’s sustainable development campaign. Kurtz leaned on Budish and ultimately persuaded him to follow a false interpretation of state law. Kurtz promulgated the belief that hotels that host more than 30 days violate temporary residence permits. However, a state-licensed fire marshal backed Ramada, saying it was perfectly legal and in fact common for hotels to host guests for more than 30 days. Getting a guest out of one room after this threshold is considered a legitimate workaround.

Moreover, it was a pandemic and Kurtz’s threat of strict legal enforcement was not only inaccurate, but also immoral. NEOCH calls Kurtz’s vigorous efforts to eliminate Ramada’s men as racist and discriminatory.

NEOCH now says it will face the men who refuse to leave, mainly for security reasons. Many men fear returning to Lake 2100 given the rise of the Covid Delta variant. And at least some of them are not fully vaccinated.

The owner of the hotel, Sharif Omara, said he was eager to make the deal and also helped the men who refused to move.

“We’ve been helping LMM and these guys for months, but we can’t leave them alone. They have a safe and comfortable place to stay as humans, ”Omara said in a statement. Right. Throwing everyone at 2100 Lakeside Avenue is dangerous and inhumane. We believe this will definitely increase COVID-19 of the homeless population. ”

NEOCH held a press conference in Ramada at 9 a.m. and sent Almond Badish a letter requesting the following:

  • We will honor the original contract date of August 31st to maintain Ramadain as a designated emergency accommodation location without a meeting.
  • We will continue to support the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry so that we can continue to serve as a premier service provider for food, security and social protection needs on site.
  • Make sure that your guests’ accommodation demand and accommodation planning are not compromised.
  • Make sure the county is in direct contact with Ramadain guests.
  • The North Point Shelter tackles the problem of young adults losing their beds and creates space for men to move to that location.
