Afghan Sikhs and Hindus angry as lawmakers ‘sneak’ into India | Chandigarh News

Ambala: The 260 or so Hindus and Afghan Sikhs left behind in Kabul, seized by the Taliban, are angry with two of their deputies, Anarkali Kaur Honaryar and Narinder Singh Khalsa, who “sneaked into India” from Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Karta-e -Parwan, Saturday evening.
Official Indian sources said 24 Afghans, including the two MPs, boarded an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 to escape Kabul on Saturday evening. The special repatriation flight with 168 Indians also reached Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Sunday morning. Of the 285 Hindus and Sikhs who took refuge in the gurdwara, a mixed group of 70 and a few Indians had twice attempted to enter Kabul airport on Friday and Saturday. They waited 43 hours as reported from India before the Taliban kicked them back from the gates on Sunday morning, saying the Afghans could not leave the country.
The 70 Afghans, including MPs Honaryar and Narinder Singh, had returned home to Kabul or the gurdwara. The other members gathered at the gurdwara on Sunday to recite Sukhmani Sahib to pray for their safety. They cursed their leaders for abandoning them. Sources in Kabul said that on Saturday evening Honaryar spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on an appeal about the safety of those stranded in Afghanistan.
A Sikh from Jalalabad who was part of the first group that tried to escape said: “All the sangat of 260 are in distress and sitting in the guru’s house in Kabul. Our deputies chose to flee before evacuating us. We don’t know how they did when we were fired. Apparently they got calls and took their families out in secret. How could they? We sat with them near the airport for two days amid the gunfire.
He said: “We are told that we will also be evacuated. Gurdwara President Gurnam Singh, brother-in-law of MP Narinder Singh, is in contact with some relief organizations. I sit her down after closing my medicine store. All Jalalabad Sikhs came to Kabul, bearers of their faith in Waheguru. ” Another Sikh in those 70 said: “The sangat is angry with the MPs as they left and now Gurnam Singh says there will be a daily evacuation.
Upon arriving in Hindon, Afghan MP Narinder Singh collapsed in front of the media and said: “We have lived in Afghanistan for generations, but we have never seen anything like it. Everything we have built in the past 20 years is finished. Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Sunday: “Evacuation continues! A special IAF repatriation flight with 168 passengers on board, including 107 Indian nationals, has been on its way to Delhi since. Kabul. ”
Paramjeet Singh Bedi, a member of the Global Sikh Council in New York, was angry with Afghan MPs for a different reason, saying: “We told them to reach India quietly and not to go to the media. However, they uploaded their photos from Kabul. Now they have escaped. and we have Sikh families to save. India requested 23 names and we sent MPs first.
The President of the World Organization of the Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, tweeted “Evacuation flight… including 24 #afghansikhs landing in Hindon… at 10 am The United States accepts… 2 daily flights to India to evacuate 1 000 Indians and 260 Afghan Sikhs. Efforts of @MEAIndia @DrSJaishankar @M_Lekhi @ wpoindia @sunfoundationIn #rehablitation. ”
Sahney said, “We have set up a war room with the MEA. These Sikhs and Hindus didn’t want to give up their sources of income in Afghanistan, and we didn’t want a repeat of 1947. It was difficult to convince them to save their lives and give up their heritage, their business and their way of life. Being a refugee is a stigma for them. They were once very prosperous. ”
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also tweeted on Sunday: “Happy to note that 209 Indian nationals have been safely evacuated to Delhi along with 24 Afghan Sikhs… #MEA is working on the evacuation of 222 other Sikhs and Afghan Hindus. ” Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Chairman Manjinder Singh Sirsa said: “I thank the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Home Affairs, as the coordination of the airlift was an exercise marathon.”
