Some schools in Dubai have announced a long weekend of welcome for students on the occasion of Diwali.

Classes will not take place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, the schools said. Combined with the weekend, this equates to a welcome four-day holiday.

“Well-being is the main goal here,” said Zubair Ahmed, head of operations at Springdales School, who announced a four-day long weekend for Diwali.

Elaborating on the importance of the move, he said: “We have all had very difficult times recently. The government has started the long weekend trend so that families can spend quality time with each other and this is a strategic alliance with wellness goals.

Zubair pointed out that several destinations tend to be booked on weekends. Giving students a few extra days off would make it easier for them to visit such places, which in turn would contribute to happier environments.

“As we are a CBSE school, it is important for us to celebrate the culture of India. As children do not have the chance to see the celebrations in India, we want to help them understand the culture and the country, regardless of religion and origin, ”Zubair added.

The Global International School in Dubai has also extended weekends for its students on occasion. School principal Antony Koshy said, “Diwali is the festival of lights. Spiritually, it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. “

Marking the festival is also symbolic given that “the past 18 months have been a battle for all of us,” he added. “In the UAE we have a global community and people of all backgrounds and nationalities are happy to be a part of any celebration.”

In fact, he noted: “Our children have just finished their midterm exams and would like to take a break!

The director urged parents to spend quality time with their families, to venture out and see the world with their children – and, of course, to follow all Covid protocols in the process. “The value of being with your family will now be greater than ever,” he said. “In addition, everyone can enjoy the long weekend with the current good weather in the United Arab Emirates.”
