the Assassin’s Creed The series started in 2007 and has since grown into one of the biggest gaming franchises with 24 games in total. Developed by Ubisoft and its many subsidiary studios, modern Assassin’s Creed the mainline installments are gargantuan games with expansive worlds and ambitious scope. Relatively, Assassin’s CreedThe original game looks rather quaint, but was an escapist title filled with lots of potential and inventive ideas.
The franchise has now been a staple in gaming for three consecutive console generations, with the latest, Valhalla, being the first to land on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While each game offers a self-contained narrative, an overarching story has tied most games together through a handful of modern protagonists. The current segments are often derided, but are integral to the series’ foundation and continue to expand the Assassin and Templar conflict into the 21st century.
At this point, the series has undergone a gradual transformation, with various games adding and removing mechanics. the Assassin’s Creed the timeline connects its events and characters, but the games themselves are a handbag of playstyles, from deep-sea naval combat to side-scrolling platformer. The series has been truly prolific, averaging more than one game per year since its inception, featuring nine classic games, a new trilogy that flirts with the RPG genre, and a dozen spin-offs of varying scope.
Assassin’s Creed has 9 classic main games
the original Assassin’s Creed was an action-adventure game with openly explorable areas, and can be considered open-world, but does not quite reach the extent to which the term is generally applied, although many of its successors can be completely labeled as such. For newer gaming sensibilities, the first game in the series is rather repetitive. The bulk of the game takes place in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade in 1191, with players assuming the role of Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, an assassin tasked with eliminating nine prominent Templar officials. Altaïr (and many others Assassin’s Creed protagonists) is an ancestor of Desmond Miles, the first Assassin’s Creed control of current character players.
Desmond would play in four more games: Assassin’s Creed II and its direct consequences, fraternity and Revelationsand Assassin’s Creed III. AC2 is the beginning of a trilogy starring the protagonist of the Italian Renaissance, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Expanding both historical and modern stories, each game has also expanded combat and traversal mechanics, and fraternity even introduced multiplayer to the series. AC3 was the last game in which Desmond was at the center of the 21st century and was possibly originally the intended end of the series. Players were transported to Colonial America during the American Revolution and took control of the half-English, half-Mohawk raccoonhnhaké:ton, aka Connor. This fifth game was originally going to have a sci-fi mythology finale, ending the Assassin’s Creed series on a spaceship.
Probably due in large part to the series’ popularity, Desmond was killed off instead, and the main series continued with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. As Pirate Captain Edward Kenway, players explored THATis the first truly homogeneous open world set in the early 18th century Caribbean. Modern history has begun to matter even less in black flag and the two games that followed it – Assassin’s Creed Thief and Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Thug continued black flagof naval lore off the northeast coast of colonial Americas with Assassin-turned-Templar protagonist Shay Patrick Cormac, a first for the series.
Unity place players in the midst of the French Revolution as Assassin Arno Dorian. Although the series has made significant progress in bringing more complexity to combat and exploration, Unity made improvements to the series’ signature parkour mechanics and had an impressive NPC density. UnityThe incredibly buggy launch prompted Ubisoft to reinvent the Assassin’s Creed series, but the ninth classic game was already in the works. Union proves the series didn’t need to change, with more significant additions to combat and stealth than Unityand a compelling story of Victorian England with twin protagonists, Evie and Jacob Frye.
Assassin’s Creed has been reimagined in a new trilogy
In 2017, a new era began for the mainline Assassin’s Creed series with the release of Origins. It featured Bayek of Siwa, a former Egyptian Medjay who, along with his wife Aya, would found the Hidden Ones, a precursor organization to the Brotherhood of Assassins. The series had always been quite ambitious, with each main title providing a decent amount of content, but Origins thrust the series into open-world RPG territory. In addition to an absolutely huge open world, Origins has a lot of weapons and armor, a crafting system and a varied skill tree. Players progress through the many areas of the game as Bayek progresses, completing a wide variety of main and side quests.
Unfortunately, this reinvention led to Assassin’s Creed games get extremely bloated, which is probably the most common criticism of the two most prominent recent games, Odyssey and Valhalla. Odysseycentered on the Spartan mercenary Kassandra (or her non-canon male counterpart Alexios) takes place even before Origins in ancient Greece. Following the adventures of a Viking named Eivor, Valhalla is set primarily in the ninth-century British Isles. This new trilogy also saw the return of a more prominent modern narrative. Ex-Abstergo researcher Layla Hassan follows in Desmond’s footsteps, attempting to stop yet another doomsday scenario. Although Valhalla released in 2020, still supported as current version Assassin’s Creed game, with another expansion titled Dawn of Ragnarök scheduled for March 2022.
The Assassin’s Creed series has 12 spin-offs
While the mainline series has steadily built on the gameplay foundations laid in its earliest entries, spin-off titles Assassin’s Creed vary greatly in gameplay. The very first spin-off was Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles of Altair, which came to smartphones and the Nintendo DS shortly after the original game, and was a narrative prequel to it. In keeping with the tradition of the series, Assassin’s Creed the spin-offs include many settings, such as New Orleans, China, Russia, India, and Spain.
Some titles, like Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Assassin’s Creed: Cry of Freedomare virtually full-fledged entries, with the latter even beginning as DLC for black flag before getting a standalone version. Others have various mobile game gimmicks or mimic main series gameplay in a simpler format, like some of the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games, which could be considered 2.5D platformers.

Although more traditional slices are expected, a project dubbed Assassin’s Creed Infinity is also under construction. AC InfiniteThe live-service model is unsurprising given the series’ descent into rampant micro-transactions, but full judgment will have to wait until there are more details on the project. For now, Assassin’s Creed is still preoccupied with Eivor’s exploits, but the series’ impressive 24-game run still has no end in sight.
