International Abhidhamma Day celebrations on October 9

New Delhi, October 6 (SocialNews.XYZ) The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), in collaboration with Gautam Buddha University (GBU), will celebrate “International Abhidhamma Day” at the University Campus of Greater Noida on Sharada Purnima, which will fall on October 9.

The day marks the return of Lord Buddha from heaven to earth after preaching the Abhidhamma Pitaka to his mother.

In Buddhism, the Abhidhamma Pitaka is an important scripture.

It was in Sankassiya, currently known as Sankisa Basantapur, Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, that the Buddha returned to earth.

The main guest of the event will be Dr. Ashin Nanissara (Sitagu Sayadaw), Chancellor, Sitagu International Buddhist Academies, Myanmar.

The participation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chancellor of Gautam Buddha University as guest of honor has not yet been confirmed.

Abhidhamma day in 2021 was organized in Kushinagar at Mahaparinirvana temple,
where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honour. He also inaugurated the Buddhist pilgrimage city’s international airport.

According to Theravada tradition, this day is believed to be blessed because Buddha went to heaven to teach Abhidhamma Pitaka to his mother. The teaching lasted for three months after which Buddha returned to earth. His disciples mark the time of three months by staying in one place and praying. It is known as the three-month rainy retreat – Varshavaas or Vassa – for Buddhist monks and nuns.

Sankisa Basantapur is documented by Ashokan marker – Ashokan Elephant Pillar, signifying the significance of the place and the event. It is recorded in the Buddhist texts that after teaching the Abhidhamma to the “Devas” and his mother as a witness, he descended here.

Eminent monks from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, India-based ambassadors and other diplomats representing various countries will also participate in the Abhidhamma Day celebrations at the GBU.

This is IBC’s third flagship program; the other two being Buddha Purnima and Asadha Purnima.

Other highlights of the day’s event included a panel discussion on “the importance of Abhidhamma”, a book launch, the screening of the film about the IBC project in Lumbini and a cultural program by students from Buddhist universities.

The IBC is a Buddhist umbrella body that serves as a common platform for Buddhists around the world. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

It currently has over 320 member organizations worldwide, both monastic and lay, which include world bodies, national and regional federations, monasteries, international organizations and institutions.
