Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh was a valued figure and a capable leader who has become a “symbol of faith” for the people.

Modi was speaking to reporters after paying a final tribute to the veteran BJP leader at his residence here.

Singh died on Saturday evening at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow. He was 89 years old.

“The country has lost a valuable personality and a capable leader. To fill the void left by him, we must work to the maximum for his ideals, his promises and leave no effort to make his dreams come true, ”said Modi.

The prime minister said Singh had lived his life for the public welfare.

“This is a time of mourning for all of us. His parents (Kalyan Singh) named him Kalyan Singh. He lived his life in such a way that he fulfilled the name given by his parents. He lived all his life. life for the public good. He made ‘jan kalyan’ the mantra of his life and dedicated his life to BJP, the Bharatiya Jan Sangh family, to an ideology and to the bright future of the country, ”said Modi .

He hailed Singh as a “committed decision maker” who had become “a name of faith (‘vishvaas’) across the land”.

“For most of his life he worked for the public welfare. Whatever responsibility he had had, whether as an MP, any government post or as governor, he had been a center of inspiration to everyone. It has become a symbol of faith for the general public, ”added Modi.

“I pray at the feet of Bhagvaan Prabhu Shriram to give Kalyan Singh ji space at his feet. May Prabhu Ram strengthen his family in a time of sorrow to endure the loss. May Prabhu Ram bring comfort to the people of the country who believe in its values, ideals, culture and traditions, ”said the Prime Minister.

Modi, after reaching Singh’s residence here, paid homage to him and laid a wreath on his body.

He was accompanied by BJP Chief JP Nadda, UP Governor Anandiben Patel, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chief Deputy Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the former UP chief minister.

Speaking to reporters here, Rajnath Singh said: “We were telling him (Kalyan) that we are ‘bhootpoorv’ (former) chief minister, you are ‘abhootpoorv’ (unprecedented), which he laughed at. I saw him as an older brother.

BSP chief Mayawati also paid tribute to the late leader.

At around 12:30 p.m., Singh’s body was taken to UP Vidhan Bhavan. From there, he will be taken to the state BJP office, party leaders said.

Singh, who also served as governor of Rajasthan, was admitted to SGPGI’s intensive care unit in critical condition on July 4.

He died of sepsis and multiple organ failure, the hospital said.

Uttar Pradesh announced a three-day mourning and public holiday on Monday, when the former chief minister’s last rites will be celebrated.

Singh was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh when the Babri Mosque was demolished by a mob of “karsevaks” in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. Along with BJP veterans LK Advani and MM Joshi, he was among 32 acquitted in the demolition case in September of last year.

Leader Lodhi, Singh was instrumental in the rise of the BJP to power in Uttar Pradesh in the 1990s.

He is survived by his wife Ramvati Devi, his son Rajveer Singh, who is the Member of Parliament for Lok Sabha of Etah, and his grandson Sandeep Singh, who is the Minister of State for Finance, Technical Education and of Medical Education in Uttar Pradesh. PTI
