San Jose Obon this weekend

SAN JOSE — San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church, 640 N. 5th St. in Japantown, is hosting its Obon Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

1]Will Obon 2022 be the same as last year?

Not enough! We have booths that are on hiatus this year. We hope to recover as many as possible in 2023. A huge THANK YOU to all the organizations that registered for 2022!

2]Where can I find Odori (Japanese dance) practice videos online?

You can find the link here:… (thanks to Mr. Mas Nishimura for compiling).

3]Will the parking/shuttle situation be the same as in the past?

Yes. We will have parking available in the First Street and Hedding Street public car park. We will have simultaneous shuttles running from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Please plan accordingly in case we are slightly behind. Security will be on site during opening hours. We also have our regular street parking and we ask that you be respectful of our neighbors, if you decide to park there.

4]Can I bring my dog?

If you must bring your pet, we ask that you please keep all dogs on a leash and be able to handle crowds, children, etc. Other than service animals, we ask that you do not bring your dog into the food court. Thanks for understanding. As always, please clean up after your pets.

5]Should I wear a mask?

A large crowd is expected. Although masks are not required outdoors, we ask that you wear a mask in crowded areas unless you are actively eating or drinking. Also, for the safety of others, we will ask for the wearing of the mask inside.

6]Where can I get help dressing for the dance?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide changing rooms and clothing assistants this year. However, below are some useful links if you want to dress up. You can also come as you are or in happi coat.

7]I’m not comfortable coming to Obon but I don’t want to miss it.

We understand that some may still get used to being in a crowd. Some of our shows will be broadcast live on our San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church Facebook/YouTube channels. We can’t wait to see some of you virtually!

8]I would like to volunteer. Are there still places?

Yes. We have a few shifts that still need help. Email [email protected] and we can send you more information. A big thank you to the many people who have already registered.

9]Will there be bicycle parking?

Unfortunately, from now on we will no longer have the bicycle parking areas that we had in the past. Be prepared to lock your bike securely and be aware that there have been several issues with bike theft this year.
